In today's fast moving world many people are looking for muscle cars as was popular in the 1950 and 1960's. Today with all the smog & state requirements many people are making modifications to their domestic and import car.
The process generally consists on bolt on performance.

I.E.: Turbochargers, Superchargers, Modified fuel injection systems, exhaust system modification and changing of the ROM chips for the engine computer and of cause modified to the engines.

At this point most people discover the need to make improvements to the drive train, as the stock clutch (with manual transmission) is not adequate to hold up under the new torque. But what does the guy who, has made all these wonderful change to his compact car, mini van, small truck or sports car, if he has a automatic transmission.

(If you think about it, the automatic has everything going for it. They are very easy to shift, wonderful in traffic, and lets face it your leg never get tired and more and more cars come with automatic transmission now days.)

The equivalent to the manual clutch with standard transmission is the torque converter for the automatic transmission. Now as it was necessary to change to performance clutch with the standard transmission it is also necessary to change to performance torque converter to match the new specifications for your performance improved engine.

The torque converter for all intents and purpose is a present clutch, when your engine reaches a specific RPM the torque converter begin to engage and transfer power to your transmission as the engine RPM increases it reaches a point where the RPM of the input shaft of the transmission equals the RPM of the engine crankshaft and the automatic transmission the takes over and shifts through the necessary gears.

Now factory torque converters are designed to satisfy the greatest number of people for each specific vehicle. (taking performance specifications of the engine in mind.)  This is great for marketing and manufacturing of cars in large quantity but is lacking if performance is what you are looking for.
